Description: It may be questioned whether any body of students in a divinity school ever received a course of lectures on the Reformation comparable to the series delivered by William Cunningham (1805-1861), Professor of Church History at New College, Edinburgh. The best of these addresses, already prepared by Cunningham for the press, were issued in this form after his death by his colleagues, James Buchanan and james Bannerman. They describe the volume as 'an orderly series of discussions, embracing the leading historical characters and the great developments of scriptural truth at the time of the Reformation'.
Cunningham's approach to his subject is both historical and theological. He believed that the Scriptures teach clear and definite doctrines and that the spiritual revival and controversies of the 16th century were inseparably linked to the powerful restatement of those doctrines.
Cunningham did not merely'lecture' to his students, sometimes, as a contemporary said, he'rampaged'. In him, learning, earnestness and eloquence were welded together and the product now on the printed page is strong and soul-stirring material.
